Amanda MacDonald needed full-time employment and wanted her children to experience another culture. Both of her wishes were granted with a move to Brisbane.
Before I left the UK I was working in London, commuting home to Glasgow when I could. Moving the family to London wasn’t something I wanted to do and as there were no full-time midwifery opportunities in Scotland, I looked at my options abroad and Australia was top of the list.
I went along to a recruitment expo in London and met the team from Mater Health Services Brisbane. Not only did they have full-time opportunities, but they were specifically recruiting for experienced midwifes to work in their brand new Mothers’ Hospital. It seemed to be the perfect fit!
I wanted my children to be aware that there was a wider world out there, places to experience the kind of lifestyle the UK couldn’t offer—an outdoor lifestyle, where swimming in the sea was the norm and sports of all kind were promoted.
Everything has been great since we arrived. The children settled in quickly at school and we’ve all made plenty of new friends. I work in a fantastic team at Mater and really enjoy the nurturing atmosphere where we all work to our strengths to provide excellent care to women and their families
