On Friday 16 February 2007 the new state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit located on Level 7 in the Mater Adult Hospital was officially opened by the Queensland Health Minister, The Honourable Mr Stephen Robertson MP and blessed by the Bishop, Most Rev Brian Finnigan DD.
The Critical Care Unit comprises of the Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit and Coronary Investigations Unit and is equipped with the latest health care technology. The new unit has 11 intensive care/high dependency beds and 6 coronary care beds and will provide public medical and surgical speciality services.
In the ICU, the services including gases, power and data is provided by two pendant arms at each bed space. The unit is fitted out with two negative pressure capable isolation rooms with ensuites and one positive pressure isolation room.
Ceiling mounted patient lifting hoists have also been installed over each ICU bed space, with the capacity to lift over 200kg. One hoist will be able to lift over 400kg.
The CCU beds are designed as six single bedrooms, four with private ensuites and two with a shared ensuite.
In addition the new look Mater Adult Specialist Clinics located on levels 2 and 3 and Medical Records on level 1 are now also fully operational in the newly established Stanley Street extension as part of the redevelopment project.
The opening of these units signify an important milestone in Mater’s redevelopment project as they are the first new areas to open since the government announced the refurbishment of the Mater Adult Hospital and the building of a new Mater Mothers’ Hospital in 2004. Since that time, Queensland Health has pledged $127.76 million dollars to the redevelopment project
