Rotational program options (Mater Adult Hospital and Mater Private Hospital Brisbane)

The Adult Graduate Program is unique in that it allows you to start your career in your area of choice so that you can become the nurse you aspire to be. At Mater Health Services you can harness the facilities of private tertiary hospitals to your advantage and choose a program on offer within Mater Adult Hospital or Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

The program is ideal for the nurses who would like a broad overview of adult nursing practice in a variety of wards within a private hospital (Mater Adult Hospital also provides public health care services) setting. The available rotations may include:

• orthopaedics
• rehabilitation
• haematology, oncology, palliative care
• neurosurgical
• general medical
• general surgical
• gynaecology, urology, ENT, plastics
• emergency department
• intensive care
• day surgery
• postnatal wards
• endoscopy
• operating theatres.

Please note: all areas may not be available for every intake of graduates.

If you are successful in obtaining a position on a rotational graduate program at Mater, we will provide you with a list of available rotations and you will be asked to select your preferences from this list.

Mater Children’s Hospital Graduate Program

Mater Education Centre's paediatric nurse educators offers graduate nurses within Mater Children's Hospital the following clinical opportunities

• twelve month Paediatric and Child Health Transition Program
• two clinical placements (the clinical placement options may include two of the following):
  • Paediatric Emergency Department
  • 7 South (surgical)
  • 7 East (medical)
  • 8 South (infants)
  • 8 East (cardiac)
  • Mater Children's Private Hospital
• a specialty year in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. This is available to all interested graduates after they have completed 12 months clinical experience in the general medical or surgical wards.

Oncology Graduate Program (Mater Adult Hospital and Mater Private Hospital Brisbane)

Mater Private Hospital and Mater Adult Hospital offer Oncology Graduate Programs to assist you in attaining the essential knowledge and competencies required to provide quality care for patients and their families living with cancer.

From diagnosis to cure or palliation, our Oncology Graduate Program offers challenging opportunities to exercise clinical problem solving abilities and are designed to enhance the your clinical and leadership skills and develop an ongoing commitment to professional development.

Participants in the Oncology Graduate Program will receive support from a dedicated educator, clinical facilitator, and graduate support team, who will assist you with ‘hands on’ competency based training that will be enhanced by a balance of clinical and theoretical components.

Peri-operative Graduate Program (Mater Private Hospital Brisbane)

Mater Private Hospital offers you a Perioperative Graduate Program that will help you develop the essential competencies needed to provide quality care in a surgical environment. The program is designed to advance your clinical skills and develop an ongoing commitment to professional development from the beginning of your career.

Our Perioperative Graduate Program offers you clinical experience in a variety of perioperative specialities that include state of the art technology. During your first year, your rotations comprise:

• circulating nurse and instrument nurse
• anaesthetic nurse
• post-anaesthetic nurse

In the final six months of the program, you may choose which speciality in which to work, in order to further develop your skills.)

Mater Adult, Children’s and Mothers’ Perioperative Program

Mater’s perioperative services function as part of Queensland’s only adult, paediatric and maternity combined operating suites. With 16 tertiary level theatres collocated and managed under a single management structure, our perioperative staff have exposure to an interesting and varied case mix. Rotations include:

• instrument/circulating/post-anaesthetic recovery in adult operating suite
• instrument/circulating/post-anaesthetic recovery in paediatric operating suite
• instrument/circulating/post-anaesthetic recovery in mothers’ operating suite

Supported by our perioperative educator and two clinical facilitators, the program offers a five-day theoretical module as part of a five-week introductory component. During the year there are an additional five study days to assist you in your transition to perioperative nursing.

CardioVascular Graduate Program (Mater Private Hospital Brisbane)

Mater Private Hospital offers graduate nurses the opportunity to specialise in cardiovascular interventional nursing. The Cardiovascular Graduate Program has been designed to assist your development from beginning practitioners to competent clinicians in various cardiac nursing environments.

You will gain valuable experience within three cardiac nursing environments including the Cardiac/Vascular Patient Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, and CardioVascular procedural unit. Whilst gaining valuable cardiovascular knowledge and experience, you will receive support from educators, clinical facilitators, and the graduate support team.

Neurosurgical Graduate Program (Mater Private Hospital Brisbane)

Mater Private Hospital offers a comprehensive program that transitions the novice nurse into a competent and confident neurosurgical nursing clinician by combining hands on experience with theoretical components.

You will gain valuable experience caring for neurosciences and spinal surgery patients in an acute care 30 bed ward. You will receive support from the graduate support team, educator and neurosurgical clinical facilitator.

Women’s Health and Newborn Services Graduate Program (Mater Mothers Hospital)

Mater Mother’s Hospital is offering places in the Women’s Health and Newborn Services Graduate Program for registered nurses wanting to participate in the care of women and their babies. The 12 month program will provide you with six month rotations through the Women’s Health Unit and a postnatal ward.

The ideal candidate will have high level interpersonal and communication skills and a passion for providing exceptional care to women and their babies.

Mater Mothers' Hospitals manage 9 500 births and 2 200 neonatal admissions each year, including at least 120 neonatal retrievals. The hospitals provide antenatal, perinatal and postnatal services and specialise in caring for severe complications in pregnancy, as well as newborn disorders. Additionally, an ambulatory service provides a number of midwifery antenatal outreach clinics and a home care program.
